Teaching players how to play the game is the first thing to get right. I also think there’s cross-genre applications to some of these ideals. This article covers the guidelines for puzzle design I used and why I think it appeals to that broader audience. I’m not going to suggest it’s the only way to make a good puzzle, but it works, and it appeals to a broad range of demographics and gaming preferences, including people who don’t like puzzle games. I believe I found a solid answer for “What makes a good puzzle?” that works for Puzzledorf. It was inspired by the fact that a lot of my friends, who don’t like puzzles, found my earlier puzzle games addictive. With Puzzledorf, I pursued an answer relentlessly until I was satisfied. That question has been in the back of my mind for years while making small, experimental puzzle games. I enjoy match-3 occasionally but never played this because of the dating stuff, and this looks exactly like that, except with nonograms and no boobs, I assume. When making Puzzledorf, I asked myself a question: so I'll be back after trying the demo sometime before release.Įdit: hatoful boyfriend, that's what it reminds me of. Still, if the nonograming part is solid, I can probably tolerate (or skip) the visual novel parts, and the mystery stuff might end up being something good too. not necessarily a problem in general, but in nonogram-land it can easily mean busywork and not much else (or the game basically playing itself, as seen in some other titles). even with 250 levels it looks more like a dating game with puzzles than a puzzle game with some story to break monotony, and since it focuses so much on the story, the puzzles themselves are probably gonna be on the easy side too. You clearly don't consider the dating part nonsense, otherwise it wouldn't be in the game, I was just wondering about the possibility of a story and puzzle mode. I'm curious to see if it has any of the other issues most nonograms have, but it's unlikely to be a day 1 purchase, as I'm sure it's gonna cost more than I'm willing to pay for a game, but I can wait. I'm definitely gonna check the demo before deciding on a purchase, great that it's gonna stick around for more than a few days. The demo will be available after the Steam Autumn Festival.Įnjoy, and we hope to see you on release day for the full version of the game! : - ) but we won't spoil much more beyond that! Pixel Puzzle Makeout League is a superhero story, so you'll also be investigating mysteries around the city, and maybe end up fighting a supervillain. Every puzzle has been created with a specific story moment in mind! Instead, we're more of a romantic comedy adventure, where you're going on specific dates with each character and solving puzzles exactly themed around what you're doing on that date. We wouldn't describe the dating sim elements as "nonsense," though we can clarify a little more about how it's integrated into the rest of the gameplay! We lean more towards the "dating" side and less towards the "sim" side-you won't be managing "charm points" or going through pages of menus. (Your demo save data carries over into the full game, too!) You can turn the timer off-if you download the demo, you'll be able to use our options menu to customize your puzzle-solving experience just to your liking.
